Monster Types

There is a great diversity of monsters in existence. After many years of study and continuous development, all known monsters have been categorized by similar traits, habits, and habitats.

To save on space, any monster below with a subspecies is listed as “Monster (and Subspecies)”. This is functionally equivalent to “Monster, Subspecies Monster”. Monsters with more than one subspecies are listed as “Monster (normal, Sub1, Sub2, …)”.

Lynian
Cat-like Lynians: Felyne, Melynx
Humanoid Lynians: Shakalaka
Felyne26.png Lynians are a race of sapient creatures who are native to the land. There are currently only two known Lynian species: the cat-like species composed of the Melynx and Felyne, and the humanoid Shakalaka. They are both “intelligent”, have “complex” societies, and use a language, although the Shakalaka are more primitive and barbaric while the cat species tend to live peacefully in democratic societies; before they build more intensive relations with humans, the cat-like lynians seemed to already have their own civilization.
MH3-ChaCha.png The Shakalaka are governed by a king or ruler, known as King Shakalaka, identified by a BBQ Spit on top of its head, a bigger mask, and has a club that looks like a t-bone steak. Felynes have no central authority, but they’re also more likely to spread, either integrating into local societies or adapting to the land. Both the Felyne and the Shakalaka can help human hunters.
Herbivore
Herbivores: Apceros, Aptonoth, Anteka, Burukku, Epioth, Erupe, Kelbi, Mosswine, Popo, Rhenoplos, Slagtoth
MH4-Aptonoth_Render_001.png Herbivores are weak monsters that eat vegetation from grass or trees instead of hunting for meat. They are usually docile monsters which may attack or run away if threatened. They range in many different sizes and species. Although they are all in the same group, many of the species are not closely related to each other.
Neopteron
Neopterons: Altaroth, Aruserutasu, Bnahabra, Great Thunderbug, Generu Serutasu, Hornetaur, Kunchuu, Vespoid (and Queen)
MH4-Altaroth_Render_001.png Neopterons are small insect-like monsters that usually travel in swarms. Because their shells are so brittle, they rarely drop materials when slain. Neopterons are very susceptible to poison and fire, while they hold quite a resistance to the Dragon Element. Their materials are often used to make very sharp weapons.
Bird Wyvern
Flying Bird Wyverns: Delma-Ioprey, Farunokku, Forokururu, Gargwa (and Yian), Gypceros (and Purple), Hypnocatrice (normal, Rare Species, Breeding Season), Qurupeco (and Crimson), Yian Kut-Ku (and Blue)
Raptorial Bird Wyverns: Baggi, Great Baggi, Giaprey, Giadrome, Genprey, Gendrome, Ioprey, Iodrome, Jaggi, Jaggia, Great Jaggi, Velociprey, Velocidrome, Wroggi, Great Wroggi
MH4-Yian_Kut-Ku_and_Kunchuu_Render_001.png As their name implies, Bird Wyverns are bird-like in nature, with slender, delicate bodies. Despite their comparatively small stature, Bird Wyverns often use their agility to their advantage to neutralize attackers and prey alike. There are two distinct types of Bird Wyverns: Flying Bird Wyverns and Raptorial Bird Wyverns. Flying Bird Wyverns exhibit similar characteristics to true Wyverns, with developed and functional wings. Many of these possess a hard, sharp beak which can be used to peck at attackers, and generally behave in a bird-like manner.
MH4-Great_Jaggi_and_Jaggi_Render_001.png Raptorial Bird Wyverns are reminiscent of Brute Wyverns; flightless, bipedal creatures with long tails and powerful legs. Unlike Brute Wyverns, however, these monsters are generally quite small. Furthermore, Raptorial Bird Wyverns almost always live under a social hierarchy, with young individuals, females, and beta males led by a strong, dominant alpha male, which can command and control his subjects during combat.
Flying Wyvern
True Wyverns: Anorupathisu, Basarios (and Subspecies), Berukyurosu, Diablos (and Black), Doragyurosu, Espinas (normal, Subspecies, Rare Sub), Gravios (and Black), Gurenzeburu, Halk, Khezu (and Red), Meraginasu, Monoblos (and White), Rathalos (normal, Azure, Silver), Rathian (normal, Pink, Gold), Zerureusu
Pseudo Wyverns: Akantor, Barioth (and Sand), Dhuragaua, Giggi, Gigginox (and Baleful), Hyujikiki, Nargacuga (normal, Green, Lucent), Mi Ru, Odibatorasu, Pariapuria, Tigrex (normal, Subspecies, Rare Sub), Ukanlos
MH4-Rathalos_Render_001.png Flying Wyverns are large, bipedal monsters that have two wings. These Wyverns are known as True Wyverns. However, there are some Wyverns that are quadrupedal, operating their wingarms as forearms instead, like Tigrex and Nargacuga. These monsters unofficially known as Pseudo Wyverns, due to some species being reminiscent of certain animals. For example, the Nargacuga has a stricking resemblance to a black panther, a Tigrex resembles a Tyrannosaur, and the Barioth resembles a saber-toothed cat.
MH3-Barioth_Render_001.png Some are actually flightless despite their classification as Flying Wyverns, like the Akantor and Ukanlos. These wyverns show their wyverian ancestry by the small forewings on their two front limbs. Still others are known as Cave Wyverns, though they’re otherwise not categorized differently, and are named so because of their primary habitat. The Khezu, Gigginox, and their subspecies are included in this and are well-known for their disgusting appearance. Flying Wyverns make up a large majority of all monsters.
Piscine Wyvern
Piscine Wyverns: Aruganosu, Cephalos, Cephadrome, Delex, Goruganosu, Plesioth (and Green), Lavasioth (and Subspecies)
MH3U-Plesioth_Render_001.png Superficially similar to Flying Wyverns, Piscine Wyverns typically possess fish-like bodies and are generally known to inhabit viscous environments. Common characteristics possessed by all Piscine Wyverns include highly developed fins, thick, paddle-like tails, pupilless eyes, and other fish-like facial features. Despite their aquatic appearance, Piscine Wyverns are often highly capable of terrestrial life and are even known to inhabit desert dunes and volcanic magma pools.
Carapaceon
Carapaceons: Akura Jebia, Akura Vashimu, Baelidae, Ceanataur (normal, Shogun, Terra Shogun), Hermitaur (normal, Daimyo, Plum Daimyo), Shen Gaoren, Taikun Zamuza
MH2-Daimyo_Hermitaur_Render_001.png Carapaceons are crustacean-like monsters that have hard shells and exoskeletons, similar to crabs, which mostly require weapons with at least green sharpness to break. When they’re weakened by physical damage, they show internal bleeding by the frothing of the purple bubbles from their mouths. Most of these crustaceans resemble crabs, lobsters or scorpions.
Fanged Beast
Fanged Beasts: Arzuros, Blango, Blangonga (and Copper), Bullfango, Bulldrome, Caeserber (and Subspecies), Conga, Congalala (normal, Emerald, Gold), Gogomoa, Kechawacha, Kamu Orugaron, Lagombi, Lolo Gougarf, Midogaron, Naco Agul, Nono Orugaron, Rajang, Ray Gougarf, Volvidon
Blankonga.png Fanged Beasts are beastly mammalian creatures that operate with only legs and are devoid of wings. They are often much faster than other, larger threats.
Leviathan
Leviathans: Agnaktor (and Glacial), Baruragaru, Gobul, Kuarusepusu, Lagiacrus (normal, Ivory, Abyssal), Ludroth, Nibelsnarf, Pokaradon, Royal Ludroth (and Purple), Uroktor
MH3-Lagiacrus_Render_001.png Leviathans are a recent class of monsters, mainly comprised of serpentine creatures with long, slender bodies and paddle-like tails. Unlike most other monsters, many Leviathans are accustomed to aquatic life and, in fact, are often apex predators in their underwater habitats. Those that are aquatic can be found on land as well but are much better suited to life under the sea. However, some Leviathans are uniquely adapted for terrestrial life, many capable of digging and burrowing to surprise prey from below. Leviathans can be found in a wide variety of habitats, ranging from oceans and deserts to volcanoes and frozen tundras.
Brute Wyvern
Brute Wyverns: Abiorugu, Barroth (and Jade), Brachydios, Deviljho (and Savage), Duramboros (and Rust), Giaorugu
MH3-Barroth_Render_001.png Also a recent class, Brute Wyverns are typically large, bipedal, theropod-like creatures that are prone to living in areas abundant in food sources. They exhibit a wide variety of dietary habits; some are strictly herbivorous or carnivorous, while others subsist on insects or even minerals. These monsters often use their heavy, muscular bodies to charge blindly through an environment to damage attackers or prey, and they often ahve many defensive adaptations, including tail clubs, horns, and even hammer-like chins and fists. Like most classes, Brute Wyverns can be found in almost any type of environment.
Fanged Wyvern
Fanged Wyverns: Zinogre (and Stygian)
Zinogre_MH4_Render.png Fanged Wyverns are the rarest class of all. Thought by some to be myth, these mammal-like wyverns are incredibly powerful and boast long lists of abilities. The only verified species to date are Zinogre and its subspecies.
Elder Dragon
Elder Dragons: Alatreon, Amatsumagatsuchi, Ceadeus (and Goldbeard), Chameleos, Dara Amadhura, Daren Mohran, Dhisufiroa, Dire Miralis, Fatalis (normal, Crimson, White), Jhen Mohran (and Hallowed), Kirin (and Subspecies), Kushala Daora (and Rusted), Lao-Shan Lung (and Ashen), Lunastra, Myo Galuna, Rebidiora, Rukodiora, Shagaru Magara, Shanthien, Teostra, Yama Tsukami
MHFG-Rebidiora_Render_001.png Elder Dragons are the oldest and most feared class of monsters. Unlike typical species classes, like Brute Wyvern or Bird Wyvern, Elder Dragon is rather a collection of species with no definitive features, similar to Herbivore or Fanged Beast. The one trait they do all share, though, is the ability to cause devastating disasters. These monsters are rare, powerful, and are sometimes even treated as deities by some hunters.
Jhen_Mohran_Artwork.png Elder Dragons exhibit a wide variety of body types, the most common being a quadrupedal entity with a long tail and two wings. However, some Elder Dragons can possess Equine or even Cephalopodic features. This class includes monsters that are suited to any realm, be it land, sea or, air. In addition, Elder Dragons can be found in almost any environment in the world and are generally the most powerful monsters one can encounter in any given zone.
